Yeo Myeong Jae is a house built on a hill in a rural area (Inbo-ri, Duseomyeon, Ulju-gun) near Busan and has a stunning view of a small reservoir. The owner, K, asked his old friend, Young Kim, who is an architect, to design a house and to participate in construction management. This house became a residence for the owner, K, and his spouse and it also is his nest for a new life in Korea after retiring from a long life in a foreign country. Yeo Myeong Jae was asked to design both a main building (175㎡) and an annex (52㎡, a room with underfloor heating installed for winter). The annex was planned to be used as a guest house for visitors and neighbors. In the process of building and completing the house, the main building grew to 234㎡ and the annex to 56㎡. Therefore, the total area of registration
became 274㎡.

In addition to the architectural construction, the civil, landscaping, fence, and gate construction were added to the 1,157㎡ wide target site. In accordance with the owners’ wishes, the landscaping work was finished by the owner himself. Yeo Myeong Jae does not follow the paradigm of domestic housing that we usually see, but it contains our traditional housing concept and the functional convenience of western housing. The space of Yeo Myeong Jae is cool, open, and systematic. The main entrance and a living room that were difficult to understand as a space concept of a general house, and a private kitchen and a dining room, which were designed as an independent space layout, were planned from a functional approach that can be seen in western houses. The appearance and form of the house are close to that of European architecture.

The positive large yard, front yard, fence, and backyard are the components of our traditional outdoor space, and the deck in front of the living room functions as our main floored room. The veranda porch at the entrance in the annex resembles our cottage veranda porch and the room with the heated floors for winter was reproduced in the traditional way by the experts in floor heating system installation.

여명재는 부산 근교의 전원지역(울주군 두서면 인보리)의 작은 저수지를 전경으로 하는 빼어난 경관을 가진 구릉지 위에 지어진 집이다. 건축주 K씨의 요청으로 그의 어릴적 친구인 건축가 김영이 기획하여 설계하고, 공사관리 참여를 통해 지어진 K씨와 그의 반려자를 위한 주거공간이자, 오랜 외국생활 끝에 한국에서의 새로운 삶을 담을 그의 둥지이다. 여명재는 집주인 내외의 삶을 담을 주택 본채(53평)와 별채(구들방/16평)로 설계 요청을 받았다. 별채는 방문자와 이웃을 위한 게스트 하우스로 이용할 계획으로 기획되었다.

집을 짓는 과정과 준공 과정에서 본채는 71평으로, 별채는 17평, 등기 상 전체 면적은 83평의 규모가 되었다. 350평의 넒은 대지에 건축공사 이외에 토목, 조경, 담장 및 대문 공사가 추가되는 공사였으며, 집주인의 취향에 맞춰 조경공사는 집주인이 직접 공사를 하여 마무리 하였다.

여명재는 통상적으로 볼 수 있는 국내 주택의 패러다임을 완전히 배제하였으며, 우리가 살아온 전통적인 주거공간의 개념을 담으면서도 서양주택이 가진 기능적인 편리한 면을 가지고 있다. 여명재의 공간은 시원시원하고 개방적이며 유기적이다. 일반적 주택의 공간 개념으로서는 이해되기 어려운 진입공간과 거실, 지극히 사적인 주방과 식사 공간 등 독립된 공간의 구성으로 서양주택에서 볼 수 있는 기능적 접근으로 계획되었으며, 외관과 형태는 유럽 건축의 작품 성향에 가깝다. 포지티브한 큰 마당, 앞마당, 담장, 뒷마당은 우리의 전통 옥외공간의 구성이며, 거실 앞의 데크는 우리의 대청마루와 같은 기능이다. 별채의 출입구 툇마루는 우리의 시골집 툇마루의 형태를 닮았고, 구들방은 구들 전문가에 의해 전통방식 그대로 재현하였다.
